Medical Laboratory Science

Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) are individuals who:

  • Analyze the chemical substances in the body.
  • Detect abnormal cells in the blood.
  • Identify the type of bacteria responsible for an infection.
  • Match the blood given to an accident victim.

UOIT’s Bachelor of Health Science in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program is the first of its kind in Ontario. You will be introduced to the exciting diagnostic aspects of health science, including a focus on medical research. You will become skilled in the five main areas of the diagnostic laboratory:

  • Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Histotechnology
  • Microbiology
  • Transfusion medicine

The program also emphasizes:

  • Professional communication
  • Research skills
  • Scientific writing

With the health-care system becoming increasingly dependent on sophisticated laboratory technologies to diagnose, monitor and treat disease and Canada's growing and aging population, we are facing a shortage of medical laboratory technologists.

As a graduate of this program, your skills and expertise will be in high demand. This program is accredited by the Canadian Medical Association; upon completion, you will be eligible to write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) national certification examination and subsequently work in all Canadian provinces and territories.
